August is a funny month in Pacifica California. The rest of the world seems to either be having fun in the sun, or suffering its wrath, here in Pacifica we can go for days without catching a glimpse of it. Over the hills and not so far away, my friends in the East Bay can be sweltering in 90 degree heat. That heat activates the ocean fog that blankets Pacifica for much of the summer, especially in August.

To some people these stretches of fog sound depressing. But I love it. I was raised in Phoenix Arizona. Repeated exposure to the most brutal sun in North America, second only to Death Valley, took its toll on me. I recently learned that in 1974 Phoenix broke a record for most consecutive days above 110 degrees. That happened to be my last full year in Phoenix. I don’t remember a big deal being made of that record. It just seemed like another normal summer to me — 18 mother f**king days. The only reason I know this is because the record was shattered last month, and yes, a big deal was made of it.

What’s this got to do with live music at Winters Tavern, I hear you saying. Well, thanks to the pandemic Winters now has an outdoor stage and beer garden. This means they have the capacity to produce more live shows than ever before. And August is completely booked … shows every day, inside and out. The outdoor shows are matinees at 4pm on Fridays, and 3pm Saturday and Sunday. It’s become my habit to walk my dog to these matinees. Along with the music, we each get some treats and a bit of social time with our friends, some furry some not.

The fog makes this possible for me. There’s no way I could be doing this under a brutal sun. So grab your jacket and let’s see what’s happening at Winters Tavern. And bring a hat too. You never know when the sun might pop out from behind the fog.

Rick’s Picks

First off is an all day party event. Bands, DJs, Pizza and more will be part of Winters Tavern support for the local SPCA as part of the dog surfing event, one of the most popular events of the year in Pacifica at Linda Mar Beach. To help Winters donate to the SPCA, see the event link, or the link I put at the bottom of this story.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 5, 2023 AT 1 PM

World Dog Surfing Champs Free Afterparty w/DJs outside in the afternoon, and bands in the evening!

There is one show in August that is the obvious standout for avant-music lovers. I’ve seen this band once before and they made such a huge impression on me that I asked CJ to arrange an interview with them, which he did. I will be publishing that interview next week with the band Vertacyn Arc Materializer. Nuff said for now.

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 16, 2023 AT 8 PM

It&i/Vertacyn Arc Materializer/The Laughs

Non-Writer favorite The Hajj are making their return to Winters and they bring a few more Southern California bands with them. If you haven’t seen the interview with them, check it out below in Related Story.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 10, 2023 AT 8 PM

Terminally ILL/The Hajj/Ded Dogs/Skip and the Last Straws/Jazmin HV

The bass player in Bond Girl and The Sean Conneries is a very good friend, Geo Kitta, who also makes the most beautiful bass guitars you will find anywhere. His two bands have honed their tune craft over the years, and who doesn’t love a James Bond theme song? The Sean Conneries play original and covers of eclectic pop that you won’t hear anywhere else. They brought CJ to his knees with goosebumps!! Watch the above video to see his complete confession.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 12, 2023 AT 8 PM

Bond Girl/The Road Runners/The Sean Conneries

The rest of these picks fall mostly into the heavy rock category. I’m relying on CJs impeccable taste and the description he gives in the video to guide me, as well as the awesome poster for this show (click on the link to see it).

SUNDAY, AUGUST 13, 2023 AT 8 PM

Thee Saturday Knights/Donkey Jaw/The Pedaling Mongos

More great posters for the rest of these shows. That, and CJs recommendation are enough for me.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 18, 2023 AT 8 PM

Trixie Rasputin Presents: Treasures, Silas Fermoy, and Life Size Models

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 23, 2023 AT 8 PM

Titans Of Industry/Sophie's Body/tba

SATURDAY, AUGUST 26, 2023 AT 8 PM

SUNDAY, AUGUST 27, 2023 AT 8 PM [NOTE: this show has moved to Sept 10]
