Wonderful writing - Thanks! Living in Sweden I've been follinging Mats G's various activities for close to 30 years now and seen him live countless times in billiobs of various constellations, even Backen grill. Fantastic artist, wonderful Music!

To be honest I actually don't. I guess Mats has a better answer than my speculation. I know a lot of people there even though it's about 1000 km from where I live (Gothenburg). Some of its uniqueness may have to do that it's the biggest city in the northern region, it do have a big and well-reputated University which means it do have a lot of young people there. I think there has always been a lot of culture; music, bookstores, art museum, theatre, creativity, etc, thus a tradition of creating stuff. During the 70's, with the punk movement, etc, I guess it was i Umeå like in most places, a lot of kids not knowing what to do and the ederly didn't understand a thing so thay just had to do it themselves and created a good comunity for it. But, again, this is just my speculation.

I think you are right about the University. I also read an interview with Dennis (Refused) where he talked about free instruments and rehearsal spaces made available by the community for anyone who wanted to use it.
